What is PFP?

Passive Fire Protection, PFP is an indispensable element of structural fire safety as the name suggests, this mechanism remains inert during normal conditions and becomes active only on the outbreak of a fire. Its aims are containing the fire to its point of origin, so as to prevent the spread of flames and smoke for a limited period, this is achieved by compartmentalising the building with the use of fire walls, floors doors, among others. Another benefit of PFP is that it protects the structural integrity of the building and considerably limits the chances of collapse and loss of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Passive fire protection is the implementation of fire-resistant construction materials built into the fabric of a building, providing fire containment and preventing a fire from spreading between designated rooms/areas and throughout a building, allowing occupants time to escape safely and for emergency services to enter and extinguish a fire.

Fire resistant materials applied to structural steelwork prevent failure and collapse of a building structural framework in the event of a fire and fire compartmentation systems are designed to keep a fire contained within designated areas to prevent it from spreading, minimizing damage and destruction of a building.

Yes, we hold third-party UKAS accreditation with IFC to install and certify passive fire protection systems.

Yes, we supply and install fire and cavity barriers for a number of applications including rigid, semi-rigid and flexible barrier systems from third party UKAS accredited manufacturers.

Yes, we supply and install passive fire protection systems (fire stopping) including intumescent mastics, ablative coated mineral fibre batts and high expansion closure device products to name a few from third party UKAS accredited manufacturers.

Yes, we supply and install structural steel fire protection options including intumescent coatings and boarding encasement systems from third party UKAS accredited manufacturers.

We do not inspect active fire systems such as sprinklers, alarms, extinguishers etc. We can conduct inspections of existing passive fire protection systems and provide advice and recommendations based on a visual appearance.

We work on occupied residential properties such as managed buildings containing multiple residences including apartment block complexes, flats, converted offices and mixed-use buildings of all scales and sizes. We do not work on singular private domestic residences including houses and individual flats.

Services We Can Provide?

Fire Stopping

Fire Comply Installations can offer a range of fire barrier services that work to prevent the rapid spread of fire within concealed spaces.
They are specifically designed to provide cavity fire protection by creating resistance to fire spreading in spaces like ceilings and roof voids,
and come in a range of options, both flexible and rigid for the right fitting protection within your building.

Our fire barrier systems are a solution to internal horizontal voids around building perimeters between floor slabs and the building envelope. In the event of fire, cavity barriers will expand and seal the void to slow the burn and extend time, offering invaluable and life-saving solutions.

Intumescent Coatings

Intumescent Coatings are used in conjunction with other fire protection methods when aiming to achieve Passive Fire Protection.

As stated by Wikipedia, “an intumescent is a substance that swells as a result of heat exposure, thus increasing in volume and decreasing in density. Intumescents are typically used in passive fire protection and require listing, approval and compliance in their installed configurations in order to comply with the national building codes and laws.”

Fire Comply Installations can apply Intumescent Coatings in buildings to ensure that they are capable of withstanding high temperatures and to also ensure that buildings are structurally safe.
This is a vital step to consider when taking fire protection measures because if you do not use Intumescent Coatings, your structure could collapse, as steel softens in high temperatures. If Intumescent Coatings are applied this can be prevented.

Acoustic and Air Seals

All buildings must adhere to the Building Regulations L2 Document for the Conservation of Fuel and Power. This document stipulates what levels of air leakage are appropriate for all UK based construction projects. Fire Comply Installations provide Air Sealing Services which can be used to increase the fire protection of a property and to improve thermal efficiency.

Despite this being a legal requirement, by Air Sealing your building you will get benefits along with it. Benefits include: lower heating bills, a contribution towards the reduction of CO2 emissions and an improvement of the internal air quality of a building.

In addition, the Department of Energy state that reducing the amount of air that leaks in and out of your home is a cost-effective way to cut heating and cooling costs, improve durability, increase comfort, and create a healthier indoor environment.

Compartmentation Surveys

Spotting breaches of integrity in compartment walls early can help save lives. Without the correct fire stopping in place, a fire can be allowed to spread freely from one intended compartment to another, regardless of structural materials or fire doors. Sometimes these breaches or penetrations are present due to being overlooked during the construction phase; at other times services may have been added to a building throughout its lifetime, creating unwelcome openings through fire-resisting walls.

Whether commercial, office, residential, or anything in-between, our aim is to keep occupants as safe as can by helping you stop any fire in its tracks. Instructing one of our accredited fire stopping specialists to conduct a survey within your building will help you identify any risk areas and the necessary remedial works to be carried out.

  • Upon completion of the survey, clients receive a comprehensive and easy-to-understand report including:
  • Details of any penetrations or other breaches of compartment lines.
  • Details of any attempt at passive fire protection works which have been carried out incorrectly, for example using expanding foam to surround service pipes or cables.
  • Photographic evidence of all findings, so the client can identify them easily.
  • Suggestions for suitable remedial works
